As most of you already know from my shameless gloating on Facebook, once again I am currently enjoying a two week break thanks to the French academic calendar. Up until now, I’ve avoided doing a lot of travelling because a lot of the time I don’t have anyone to travel with (one of the dangers of being a small town assistant rather than an Erasmus student), and there’s only so much inviting myself to my French friends’ houses that I can do before they beg me to leave the country. But with just a little over two months left in France and a long list of towns I want to visit, I stopped waiting for a travel buddy to appear and packed my bags. First stop: Bruges.
I am not ashamed to admit that my decision to visit this little town was largely (fine, completely) influenced by my decade-long crush on Colin Farrell. As Bruges is tucked away in a quiet corner of Belgium, I would never even have heard of it without seeing the film.
Although geographically the two places are relatively close, I left Compiègne at nine in the morning and didn’t arrive in Bruges until three trains and five hours later. I then promptly got lost for another hour before appearing on the doorstep of my hostel (which was all of ten minutes walk away from the station had I gone the right way). However, I didn’t mind as every street I wandered my way into was absolutely beautiful. Bruges is a medieval town and a lot of the original architecture still remains, so that most of the buildings look like this:
And most of the roads look like this:
Guess where the footpath ends and the road begins. If you guessed, LOL, wherever you feel like, congratulations, you were probably Belgian in a past life.
By the time I checked in and dumped my bag, most of the tourist attractions in Bruges were closing. Seeing as it was a nice afternoon, I decided to go for a stroll before the beer tasting evening started at the hostel. Stupidly I decided not to try to find any of the parks or the windmills until the next day, but we’ll get to that later. Here’s a couple of pictures from around the town that I took:
The beer tasting started at 20:30. The ticket was ten euro and included five bottles of different Belgian beers, with the sixth thrown in for free. I had some Duvel, Chimay, Leffe, Straffe Hendrik, Garre and Brugge Zot, and I (as a former beer loather) would recommend ALL of them. We then went out to the Markt, which is the main square and the place where the famous belfry is, and got chips from one of the green vans there. I say chips, but what I actually mean is deep fried pieces of magic. Apparently French fries were actually invented in Belgium. Knowing this and having tasted them in both countries, all I can say is France, when you steal something and act like it was your idea, you’re supposed to do it better than the original!
The next day I woke up and got ready to go exploring. I went down to the reception to sign up for the free In Bruges walking tour. The man looked at me as if I was crazy and took my name, shaking his head and muttering a little. I thought he was weird until I opened the door and saw this. Well, OK, not exactly this, because this is a Google Images photo. But it’s really hard to photograph rain.
Being a tourist (and being Irish), I shrugged and went outside anyway. First I went to the market, where I tried to climb to the top of the belfry, but was met with this:
Plan in need of change, I decided to hunt down the chocolate museum. This might be the point in the story where I reveal the extent of my lack of navigational skills: sometimes I get trapped in my duvet cover when I’m making my bed because I can’t find the opening. This might not be the smartest thing to admit on the internet, but it’s important to the story and removes the element of surprise when I tell you that it took me almost two hours to find the chocolate museum despite having a map and Bruges being relatively small.
The museum was pretty cool. It was small, but the highlight of watching a live (and effortlessly trilingual! I’m so jealous of Belgians…) praline making demonstration and tasting them at the end as well as seeing several statues made entirely out of chocolate (one being Barack Obama himself) was worth the ticket price. Being a cheap chocoholic (if it’s not Cadbury’s I’m not interested), the gift shop did nothing to sway me into buying my weight in chocolate. Yes, your handmade Easter bunnies and chickens are fabulous, but where can I buy a Crème Egg?
On returning to the hostel, I found out that the walking tour had been cancelled. No problem, even though parks were out due to the icy rain, but I could still go to find other things. Except I could not. Asking for directions proved futile: on a rainy, off-season Wednesday afternoon, the only other people outside were also tourists. Defeated and looking like a drowned rat, I ducked into a cafe promising hot chocolate made with rum to dry off. And just as well there was rum in it – when the bill came, it cost me eight euro! Lesson of the day: never order something that’s written on the blackboard without a price beside it.
After a shower I ventured back outside to find a restaurant for dinner. After becoming addicted to moules-frites/mussels and chips in June, I wanted to try them out in their home country. The only thing is, in Bruges at least, mussels do not come cheap. The average price is €21. You can get a complete menu (mussels, dessert and a beer or a glass of wine) for that in Compiègne. I finally decided on this place and hoped that they would be the best damn mussels I’d ever eaten.
They were. Everything was delicious. France’s efforts at weaning me off of ketchup and buttered bread where almost destroyed: the chips arrived with ketchup and mayonnaise on the side, and there was a pat of butter to go with each slice of bread. Somehow, I resisted.
Bruges is meant to have a great nightlife, but being unsure of how acceptable it is in Belgium for a girl to go out alone (in France it is a total no-no), I settled for a few chocolate(!) beers in a quiet bar with an open fire before heading back.
Final verdict: seeing as I didn’t manage to do all the things I wanted to in Bruges, I can’t tick it off my list. Guess I’ll just have to come back!
